Delivery

The Primary Health Center had one story scattered buildings spread out in the fine sand at that coastal village..
We stayed there for days with the waves of the sea mixed with boredom of the rotation.
It was a month after my marriage.
I managed to sneak out and go home daily to spend time with my wife.
One day it was my turn to be on-call.
They had a maternity ward and a labor room. The specialist will come in the morning and leave by noon. Rest of the time we interns had to manage everything. If there was any difficulty, we had to send the patient to district hospital.
The evening was uneventful. In the dim light in the corridor Koshi Phillip tried to put on roller skates and was falling repeatedly, Rest of the group Rajeev, Rajasekharan, Syam and few others were trying to finish off the card game.
Finally I managed to catch some sleep on that worn out mattress made of rubberized coir fibers which poked my skin through my clothes.
in the early morning I had a knock at the door.
I was needed at the delivery room.
I put on clothes and adorned a stethoscope around my neck and ran across the courtyard. The whole place was empty . It was only 6 AM. My friends were sleeping.
The pregnant lady was on the table.
The bystanders gave the history. Pain started two hours ago.
I examined her. She had not dilated fully.
I took the gloves off and walked back to the "quarters"
I had no idea what to give her. I was just fresh out of medical school.
Should I start her on something? May be Pitocin? I was not sure.
I waited next to my colleague's room after knocking on the door
He might know something... He was almost finishing his rotation this week.
"Yah... ask them to buy.XXXXX injection, give it and wait. I will come and help you. " He told me with half closed eyes and a yawn while trying to tie his clothes around his waist.

I did exactly what he told  me. The lady was in pain.
After two hours again I went and checked her. She was ready.
She needed episiotomy and the blunt scissors cut her zig-zag(sorry)
Then I delivered the infant, who came out without knowing all the miseries his mother went through, and he then cried.
The inexperienced doctor in me sighed a relief.
I did it. I did it myself...
I walked past the courtyard where my colleagues were standing, reading the news paper and dripping toothpaste across their cheeks.

My day was over at 8:30 AM.
I saw my wife parking the car and slowly coming towards me.
I introduced her to my friends.
Then I told her about my triumphant delivery.
She begged to see the baby.

I took her to the maternity ward. The lady recovered from her ordeal and had kept the infant next to her.
"can I pick her up?" my wife asked.
The lady gave the infant to my wife with a smile.
while rocking the infant, my wife said, "I am so proud of you..."
The young mother smiled again, not knowing what she said in English.
