When I was watching the documentary made by James Randi on
the issue of Psychics and the trickery, an interesting conversation struck my
mind. Why do more people still follow the tricksters and illusionists than the people
who debunk them?
The human mind likes to follow something which appears to
have existence, rather than thinking about its non-existence, which may be the
truth or closer to the truth. It is easier
to follow the notion of a bright star than a black hole.
In our daily practice, it is very difficult to prove the
absence of disease than its presence. Moreover when you tell people that “everything” they are feeling is “in
their head”, that is not going to go well.
However, if you can
say the problem is a disorder called “Toomuchgooglitis”, a not uncommon
disorder, you are taken seriously.
I should try not to appear as a skeptic, than be a re-affirmer of a non-truth; to survive
in this world.
May be lying is to be considered a more pragmatic and socially
accepted form of imagination.
A skeptic dies seeking the truth for its credibility, does not get any followers.
